Green Toes and H-Day

couldn't resist painting my toes bright witch green! I'm having a struggle with this whole Halloween thing. Ever since we moved to Mexico this holiday, which happens to be one of my favorite Holidays, has been loosing its appeal to the whole fam-bam. The first Halloween was in Puerto Vallarta and we were told by a few that we should head over to the American School for a sort-of Halloween carnival / fair event. It was well organized, full of Halloween food, treats and activities but for pre-teens who knew absolutely no-one it wasnt a hit for them. So we thought we would do some door to door trick or treating in the Marina, where there are many houses...except if we were lucky every 8th house participated in the holiday, which = very little candy.

This is really my own selfishness taking over...I mean I understand I'm far from American with the American traditions and holidays but I still have high hopes, and just want my kids to have some of those traditions. I dont think thats alot to ask for.

Halloween #2- JJ is now 12 by this time and he has lost the desire to "dress" up. I guess its not on the cool radar for him. But Leah gets right into it and we make her a fabulous Miss. Pac Man costume, that is a super hit on the Melacon in Puerto Vallarta. We ditched the whole American School this time around and didn't see much use in going back to the Marina and instead walked up and down the Melacon...there was candy being handed out by vacationers and  residents of Puerto Vallarta. We even got some candy for JJ to hand out so that he could still take part in the festivities....

This year in Merida I have no idea what we will be doing. Leah has been invited to a Halloween party, but I haven't found any activities for the family yet and "H" day is in less then a week!!! I have a feeling that we wont be doing any trick or treating ...sad day! Sooo...this contributed to the green toesies and the hope that Halloween will find us this year!

Easter Swapping

A group of friends and I did a "swap" package with an Easter theme. "What is a swap?" you ask...Well first you and one or more then one person agree to swap a specific item or you can also have a wish list of items you would love receiving with a price limit.

Sara, Jackie, Maritza and myself all decided that this would be a great way for us all to stay connected now that we are miles apart. Jackie moved to GDL and Sara now lives in Mexico City. So each one of us girls swapped packages with one other person within the group. We paired up like so:

Jackie had Maritza
Maritza had Sara
Sara had me & I had Jackie.

Normally I think we are going to be mailing items via snail mail, but for our first swap we managed to get each other our packages without spending any shipping money! Loved it!

Heres what I received:

crafted felt bird-yummy nutty/honey treats- decorative medal heart- orange floating scented candle holder & candle

Friendly Visits

My friend Sara is in Puerto Vallarta for the next couple weeks and I was very excited to meet up with her over breakfast at Hacienda's restaurant. First time I ate there and if you are ever visiting you have to stop there!!!

Sara actually moved away to Mexico City about a month ago and we never "really" got to say goodbye. So this made me even more happy to be able to spend some time with her and to catch up on her wonderful fairytale love story. You will have to go to her blog to get all the juicy details! Believe me it is worth the read! http://locuasia.wordpress.com/

We caught up on all of the things going on in our wonderful & crazy lives. It was so nice! Before you know it we had been sitting there for over 3 hours! I did not have my camera , but Sara did and as soon as I get some photos of our morning I will be sure to post!

Puerto Vallarta Hiking from Boca de Tomatlan to Las Animas

Coming from the great North West, I really do crave the outdoors and all the wonderful hiking trails that were right outside my back door. I mean there are books websites and many other recourses about hiking trailes in the Northwest. Well, here is Mexico it does not really work that way. Everything seems to be word of mouth. I like to think I'm adventurous and all but I like good website, maps and information and if there are photos thats icing on the cake! So when some friends of ours recently told us about a wonderful 2 hour hike along the south beach in Puerto Vallarta Mexico, I was all over it! I have timed it, taken photos, made notes of some key information in the hopes that someone will find this information useful and hopefully enjoy a piece of Puerto Vallarta that is experienced by few!

Getting There

The trail head begins in a small fishing village south of Puerto Vallarta named Boca de Tomatlan. It is approximatly 10 miles south from downtown Puerto Vallarta along the Mismaloya Hwy and accessible by both land an water. We took a city bus for 7 pesos (about .50) one way. Catch the bus on the corner of Basillo Badillo and Constitution You will want to board the city bus that says Boca or Boca de Tomatlon / Mysmaloya. The bus ride takes approxiamtly 25 minutes and is very scenic along the way.

Marion, Katie, Me and Edel on our way via city bus

The bus stop along the highway in Boca where you will get off

Make you way down the hill through the town towards the river. You can see the river from the bus stop.

Follow the road up river to the first bridge and cross over it to get to the trail head. The trail is clearly marked with some creative and colorful signs to lead the way to Las Animas.

We traveled along the beach for the 10-15 minutes of the hike and then the trail takes an incline and a few small switchbacks as you climb over the first hill. We saw some very beautiful homes and a few abandoned ones too. For the next 30 minutes you are hiking in the jungle surrounded by tropical foliage. We actually saw a donkey just hanging out on the other side of some barbwire. Sorry, no exotic jungle animals on this hike to talk about! ;-)

Once you start wishing you could see some ocean again you approach your first beach. First passing a villa tucked into the jungle. You are kind of walking through the back yard of the villa to get to the little bay below.

When you reach the bottom of the stairs that lead onto the beach look directly across the water and you will see that the trail continues on the other side. We had to time the waves for us to reach the stairs that continue on...take your shoes off. Take a swim here to cool off after the first leg of the hike.

The rest of the hike is pretty easy going onto Las Animas. Much more beach and less jungle. As you approach the second beach it is much bigger and there are some homes here that you walk in front of basically through terraces. The scenery from this beach is amazing. We stopped to take lots of pictures here! Stay close to the homes the rest of the way. The last bend before Las Animas seems like you have to stone hop to get there but there is a path between the homes above the beach. Look for signs to Las Animas because at this point you are only about 10 minutes away from beach umbrellas and cold beers!

Parent Child Baseball Game

Little League baseball is well underway and our JJ practices very hard each day! He has improved so much! He plays center or left field!

This past Saturday his team put on a friendly scrimmage against the parents. We had such a blast! Each family brought food for afterwards and the kids also had a couple of to break open. It was a good time to meet the other parents on the team and for the boys to "play" together, other then baseball. And can I just add how wonderful it is to be a baseball spectator in Mexico...........its ALWAYS sunny!

Halloween in Puerto Vallarta Mexico

It's Time for Halloween.......

Well sometimes we find it very hard to get into the spirit of our American holidays, so I have been working at creating crafty creatures for the house to celebrate our Halloween while living in Mexico.

I took a branch that baby coconuts grow on and then painted it black for a spooky tree (this idea comes from Jackie Vaca) I placed it into a witches kettle bucket and Leah and I made some felt ornament witches hats to go on it. We painted some mini Styrofoam balls black and rolled them around in purple glitter. (I love these) And lastly we had some skeletons figures that we put on it for a final touch.

I havent seem many pumpkins around Puerto Vallarta either. Its not like we can go to the pumpkins patch....but we did find the cutest little pumpkin with mini tendrils and all..

Happy Halloween!

The Newest Member of Our Family

All dogs go to heaven, because, unlike people, dogs are naturally good and loyal and kind.
-All Dogs Go to Heaven- The Movie

Well, we did it. We adopted a puppy from the

Puerto Vallarta Animal Shelter (El Centro de Acopio).

The roads were fun getting to the Acopio about a 30 minute drive from Centro

Leah is the proud new parent to our newest addition to the family. Puppy (that’s what we are calling her right now, because Leah just can’t decide on a name) is about 2 months old a mix bread of who knows what. Her momma had strong chiwawa features. As soon as we left the Acopio we headed straight to our vet. She was infested with tics and fleas and very malnourished but other then that so far she seems alright. She is fitting right into the family. Even Dusa, our 3 year old Doberman has accepted her. Dusa seems to “know” that she is sick and frail, she is very gentle with her.

Friends, A Life Without Them is Far Too Lonely

A year ago I left true life long friends and started a new chapter in my life in a whole new world. Coming to Puerto Vallarta was so new, exciting and scary all at the same time, but I didn’t have any friends to “share” that experience with. The people who surround us make up our daily lives. What’s important to me on last Friday becomes important to them. Before coming here I could just get in my car and drive to my friends’ house to gossip, have coffee, go on walks with and share those daily life experiences with. My life was lonely without them.

I found a quote recently that I absolutely love~

"It was by chance that we met, by choice that we became friends"

I have found new friendships in Vallarta that I will cherish forever. These gals are the best! We all got together yesterday and someone commented “isn’t it crazy how we all met” I agree. I love each of their personalities, spirits and hearts. So gals, (Jackie, Sara, Maritza and Michelle) if you happen to be reading this, Thank You for all that you are and everything you do that makes you all my……..new found forever life long friends.

Slow Sailing

This post is a little delayed but wanted to share anyway. Puerto Vallarta has a beautiful marina with a breathtaking variety of boats. The family went on a very relaxing sailing trip over the weekend on The Brier Patch, a gorgeous 60 ft vessel . I love to sail and have been patiently waiting to experience it again on beautiful Banderas Bay. JJ & Leah practice knots with Dad before we went out and were perfect little deck hands.
